At Cognizant Church we are bringing Jesus & His example into everything we do

Cognizant Church is a place for the loners, outcasts, doubters, and misfits. We want real people to experience a very real God through genuine connection and relationship. Cognizant means awareness, and we want to bring awareness of Jesus Christ, his love and grace, to all people. And when we say all people, we mean ALL people. We believe Nirvana said it best when they sang ‘come as you are’. We are a group of outcasts with a desire to grow closer to God.

Our vision is to make Jesus known to all people in all walks of life one conversation at a time, and we believe we are called to impact our community by being a living example of Jesus Christ through service, discipleship, and love for all people.

People who were raised here will tell you that West Tulsa isn’t just a part of Tulsa, it is its own community. It’s a place that people call home. From its roots as route 66, to where it meets the Arkansas River, West Tulsa will make you say that Westside is the Bestside!

It is our privilege as a church to radically reach people for Christ and love them just like Jesus did! We believe LOVE GOD, LOVE OTHERS, & SERVE THE WORLD is more than a trendy catchphrase, it’s who we are. That is why we say that Westside is the Bestside and feel confident that you will too!

Our Beliefs & Values

Cognizant Church is founded upon a set of Core Beliefs. While there are some things that we are willing to discuss in love, for us, these are the absolutes. We are called to love, teach, and preach just like Jesus did. He is our example to both follow and lead with.

The Bible

We believe the Bible is God’s word to us. It was written by human authors supernaturally inspired by the Holy Spirit. It is without error in the original manuscripts and is trustworthy. It applies to every area of life and is the authority in all matters on which it speaks. (Psalm 19:7-11, 119:105, 160; Proverbs 30:5, 2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21)

Love God

Throughout the Bible, we are called to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. What does that actually look like? Jesus. He gave everything for us to be free from the bondage of sin. You have been chosen by God and He only desires your love. Matthew 22:37, 1 Peter 2:9

Love Others

Loving others is more than loving your friends. You are also called to love your enemies. That’s when love gets REAL. God knew that we would struggle with this and that’s why it is in the Bible 8 times. We are required to keep loving even when it hurts, just like Jesus did. He loved ALL. Mark 12:31, Leviticus 19:18, Matthew 5:44

Serve The World

Who is the greatest in the kingdom of God? The one who is the greatest servant. Jesus set the perfect example for us. He went from town to town and ministered to the sick, poor, and the outcast. Ultimately, He gave His life as a sacrifice for us. Jesus was willing to give ALL. He has called us to do the same.

Salvation

Salvation from our sinful condition and destination is a free gift to us from God. You can never make up for your sin through good works. Salvation is not earned and we do not deserve it. It is offered in grace and we receive it by faith in Jesus Christ alone. When we turn from our self ruled life and turn to Jesus in faith we are saved. We are made right with God and are given eternal life. (Romans 6:23; Ephesians 2:8-9; John 14:6, 1:12; Titus 3:5; Galatians 3:26; Romans 3:28, 5:1, 10:9-10; John 3:16)

Who We Are

Our Team & Leadership

Our team is much like the people we minister to, they are unique. God doesn’t call the equipped, He equips the called. Many of us went to college. Some of us didn’t. Several have been involved in ministry and others have rocked it in the corporate world. Still, others have come to Cognizant Church with just a burning love for the people of West Tulsa.

Cognizant Church recognizes that this is God’s Church and He makes us who we are. Jesus welcomed and died for ALL. We both lead with and follow His perfect example.

Scott & Melissa Bryan

Lead Pastor

Pastor Scott Bryan grew up and was saved in a West Tulsa church. For him, West Tulsa is more than a place that he grew up in, it’s home. West Tulsa is where Scott got his beginning with Christ and knew that it was where God wanted him to plant His church.

Pastor Scott has spent the last 7 years ministering at Church That Matters in Sand Springs, OK as a Youth Pastor and Executive Pastor over their Next Generation Ministries. While there, he grew as a leader and overcame many challenges.

Before coming to Church That Matters, Pastor Scott worked as a Youth Pastor and Children’s Minister at Hillsprings Church in Sand Springs, OK for 9 years in total. He brought a special energy and fun to that ministry and is thankful for his years there.

Pastor Scott has worked on the international mission field for 11 years, specializing in leadership, team-building, and logistics coordinating. China and India will always hold a special place in his heart as he spent many years working to further the Gospel there.

Together with his wife Melissa, Scott has been working to improve the lives of the people in West Tulsa, not only spiritually, but also to meet the immediate needs there such as food. It is their passion to see West Tulsa return to be the thriving community that it once was one conversation at a time.
